Our Old Dog, Louis

Filed under: drawing — Brian @ 8:38 pm

We bought Louis from the local Humane Society, the weekend after we got married. He’s a border collie mixed with something only slightly less high-strung. But at ten years old, he’s slowing down a bit. This is him sleeping on the couch next to me last month.

My dog, Louis, sleeping. Pencil on paper.

  1. I love this sketch. Know what I like best? The paws. For some reason, I’m fascinated by the way dogs’ paws arrange themselves when they’re asleep (the dogs, that is, not the paws…although I suppose they’re technically asleep as well).

OK, I also must admit that Louis bears a striking resemblance to Abbye in repose.

    Great drawing!

  2. I love what he does with his paws, too. Normally, he uses one to rest his muzzle on, but here, he’s got all four of them all tangled up. He looks so small when he does that.

  3. That really is Louie. I like this sketch a lot.

Dogs are good as entire beings…but they have good parts too-dog feet, dog noses, ears, tails. Separate pieces that say something on their own.
