Following Eric and Beth, I couldn’t resist this one.
Here are the steps:
- Visit http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Random - The first article title on the page is the name of your band.
- Visit http://www.quotationspage.com/random.php3 - The last four words of the last quote on the page is the title of your album.
- Visit http://www.flickr.com/explore/interesting/7days/ - The third picture on the page is your album cover. (I used http://www.flickr.com/creativecommons/by-2.0/ instead to be sure to get photos the photographer was OK with sharing. So sue me. Or don’t, actually…)
I give you, “Do it for me” by Hierocles of Alexandria:

A fine inspiration for a band name. According to Wikipedia, “He seems to have been banished from Alexandria and to have taken up his abode in Constantinople* where he gave such offence by his religious opinions that he was thrown into prison and cruelly flogged.”

(I’ll say that if you wanted album art, you could do much worse than what meesterdickey has in his photostream.)
*not Istanbul.

I guess it says a lot about the state of modern music (or consumer expectations) when almost every one of these randomly-assembled packages looks like it really could be a commercially released album!

I love the juxtaposition of the ancient Greeks with the modern source of all information…it looks like more than fingers have done the walking all over this particular model though. ;-)

I think you’re right, Eric. Anything can be a band name these days. There’s a game on the local alt-rock station where the DJ gives three “band names” and people call in to guess which one he made up and which are real. It always takes a long time. It’s all to the good, I say.
Gwynne - I liked the discarded phone book and the “do it for me” quote. Like someone couldn’t be bothered to even supply a decent phone book when demanding assistance. (In direct contradiction of the intent of the quote, “Only I can change my life. No one can do it for me.”)
This is poetry.
